Asian Back Carriers v. Asian-style baby carriers

The Tummy 2 Tummy DVD uses the term "Asian Back Carriers." The page has been edited to say Asian-style Baby Carriers. Can anyone shed more light on the origin of the term that is abbreviated ABC? Do you find this valuable?

I had no idea that the T2T DVD used that term. I did a quick search of the TBW forum just now and even back in 2003-04, the usual term was "Asian carrier" or "Asian style carrier", sometimes "Asian style soft carrier" or "Asian inspired carrier" -- NOT "Asian back carrier." This is still true now. The first instance of "Asian back carrier" and the first instance of "Asian style baby carrier" I found were both in early 2004.

So, since most ABCs can be used on the front as well as the back, and indeed front carry comfort and security is a major advantage of a MT over an SSC for most people, "baby carrier" makes a lot more sense than "back carrier" -- which doesn't seem to be a commonly used term anyway. Perhaps a parenthetical explaining the alternate?

I agree with you Holly. I also think that you have to make a difference between the original types of Asian carriers, worn as they are in Asia, that is on women's back as they often take their baby with them to work in rice fields or sell products in marketplaces, and Asian-type carriers, which are adaptations of the original ones for our Western world which allows far more leisure for moms so they can wear their baby on the front. Do you find this valuable?
