Contributor's note: I don't think the chiropractor is an expert babywearer, and many experienced babywearers disagree with some of her statements, including her indication that a ring sling can't hold an older baby securely. Perhaps she had a closed-tail sling that she couldn't adjust for a good fit. Also, the ages given for when you can wear a baby on your hip or back are given as absolute rules rather than general ideas. You can certainly wear a baby on your front beyond the first 12 months ... although you may be more comfortable doing so for long periods with your baby on your back. Finally, the statement that if you're going to wear your baby, you should start right away, should not be taken as an indication that babywearing is difficult if you don't do it from birth. Many people have successfully started babywearing when their babies were several months old (and in some cases, more than a year old), and found the practice to be beneficial.
